Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea commemorates the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom's sovereignty on July 31, 1843, when Hawaiʻi peacefully regained its independence through diplomacy after five months of British occupation. This historic day stands as a lasting symbol of resilience, self-determination, and the enduring spirit of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
This design honors the legacy and vision of Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli, whose leadership reached far beyond the restoration of sovereignty. He envisioned a nation founded upon education, moral character, and enlightened leadership, declaring:
"He aupuni palapala koʻu, ʻo ke kanaka pono, ʻo ia koʻu kanaka."
"My kingdom is a kingdom of literacy. The righteous individual serves as my ideal."
These words remind us that the strength of a nation is measured not only by its independence, but by the knowledge, integrity, and righteousness of its people.
That vision is reflected in his enduring proclamation:
"Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka ʻĀina I Ka Pono."
"The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness."
Together, these timeless words continue to inspire generations to preserve the dignity, identity, and future of Hawaiʻi. This design is a tribute to the wisdom, courage, and enduring legacy of Kauikeaouli, and to the values that continue to strengthen our lāhui today.
